South Loop Grading Policy
Grade Ranges:
A: 90-100%
B: 80-89%
C: 70-79%
D: 60-69%
F: 59% or below

Homework Policy
Homework packets will go home on Mondays and will be due the following Monday. These packets will include math homework pages, spiral math page, spiral reading page, spelling words and activities, a reading menu, and freewriting practice in their writing notebook. Students will be expected to write a one full page free write each week. We will also be sending home the Reading Street textbook and workbook which students will use to complete the reading homework. Students will need to rip out the assigned pages and turn them in on Monday with their homework packet.

In addition to the packet, students are expected to read nightly, study their math facts, and use the online resources (Freckle, IXL, Reading A-Z) to improve their reading and math skills.

Homework is 10% of the student’s grade based on completion. Late work will be given a 10% reduction in the overall grade for each day it is late, up to 3 days (70%).

Attendance Policy
Students returning to school after an absence must bring a written statement signed by the parent(s), explaining the reason for the absence. If an absence of two (2) or more days is anticipated, please notify me. CPS policy will be followed regarding contacting parents of children that have five (5) or more unexcused absences (absences without a parent note). An absence note due to a vacation is considered unexcused.
Note:  Five (5) clock hours of instruction are required for a full day of attendance.  A minimum of 2 1/2 hours of instruction is required for a half-day. Students arriving after 9:45 AM or leaving before 2:45 PM will be marked for a half-day of attendance.

Early Dismissals
Parents must email me if they have a planned dismissal. The office will not disrupt classroom instruction for early dismissals.

Missed Work Policy
If your child missed school on a day that an assignment/project is due, then the work needs to be turned in upon your child's return date. (Ex. If homework is due on Monday, and your child is absent on Monday and returns to school on Tuesday, then homework needs to be turned in on Tuesday.) The same goes for assessments. Missed assessments will be given when your child returns.
If your child will miss multiple days of school, please note that they will not be given work in advance. It is difficult to gather resources and make copies for one child. Although I try to stick to my plans and schedule, unforeseen events may happen and cause plans to change. They may have to receive their work upon their return.

Uniforms
Students must wear navy blue pants/skirt (no jeans) and solid white or any South Loop spirit wear. Sweater, jackets, and sweatshirts can only be solid white or navy blue. ON PE days, students are expected to wear the South Loop P.E. uniform; a gray South Loop P.E. shirt, navy P.E. shorts, and gym shoes. Uniforms are available for purchase on southloopshop.com. We have P.E. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Home Folders
In order to facilitate communication and organization, students will be required to bring their home folder to school each day. Home folders should be checked daily to remain up to date on school and classroom events.

Conference and Communication
Parents or guardians who would like to set up a meeting with me to discuss their child’s progress in the classroom may contact me through my email at jhan4@cps.edu or by calling the school at 773.534.8690 and leaving a message. I am available most days before and after school.

I am using ClassTag to keep you involved in your child’s class this year. ClassTag is an online classroom event management and parent involvement tool for teachers.  Parents/guardians will be able to see updates about the classroom, sign-up for Student-Led conferences and other volunteer opportunities, and communicate with the teacher. We would love to get 100% of parents/guardians to join!

Lunch
Each student is provided with a free school lunch. If your child would prefer a lunch from home, please label his or her lunch box. South Loop is a gum, candy, and nut-free school. Please adhere to these rules when sending your student a lunch and snack.

Water bottle and snacks
Your child is allowed to bring a water bottle (filled with water ONLY) with a top or cap to reduce spills. Please fill the water bottle before coming to school. Our lunch this year is 10:55 so we will be having an afternoon snack. Please note that South Loop Elementary is a nut-free and candy-free school.
